Vatican says Pope Francis’ condition is improving as he receives oxygen therapy

Pope Francis is reportedly showing signs of improvement as he undergoes high-flow oxygen therapy and therapy with a ventimask, according to a statement from the Vatican. The 88-year-old pontiff was hospitalized on Feb. 14 for respiratory issues and was later diagnosed with bilateral pneumonia.

“The Holy Father dedicated the morning to respiratory physiotherapy alternating it with rest, while in the afternoon after another physiotherapy session, he gathered in prayer in the Chapel of the private apartment located on the 10th floor, receiving the Eucharist; then he dedicated himself to work activities,” the Vatican added.

On Wednesday, the Vatican announced that Pope Francis’ doctors detected a receding kidney insufficiency, blood tests showed a slight improvement, and a chest CT scan indicated that his complex lung infection was progressing normally with treatment.

Bilateral pneumonia can be challenging to recover from, especially for an elderly patient like the Pope, who has scarring from previous surgeries and bouts of pneumonia. Fox News Channel’s senior medical analyst Dr. Marc Siegel explained the difficulties associated with this condition and the significance of the treatment the Pope is receiving.

Siegel highlighted that high-flow oxygen therapy is being used to help with the Pope’s breathing issues, which is less aggressive than CPAP or mechanical ventilation. He emphasized that the fact that the Pope is not on a ventilator is a positive sign.

The Pope has a history of health issues and had part of his lung removed in 1957. Despite his challenges, Siegel mentioned the importance of both medical care and prayer in the Pope’s recovery process.

The Vatican’s statement indicated that further days of clinical stability are needed to determine the Pope’s prognosis. The Pope’s condition is being closely monitored, and the medical team is working diligently to ensure his well-being.

In times like these, the combination of medical expertise and spiritual support plays a crucial role in the recovery process. The global community continues to send thoughts and prayers for the Pope’s swift recovery.
