49ers’ Christian McCaffrey suffered ‘potentially’ season-ending knee injury vs Bills, coach says
San Francisco 49ers star Christian McCaffrey suffered a devastating knee injury during Sunday night’s game against the Buffalo Bills. The injury, believed to be a posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury, could potentially end his season, according to 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan.
The loss of McCaffrey was a significant blow to the 49ers, who have already been plagued by injuries this season. The running back had been a key part of the team’s game plan against the Bills, running the ball seven times and catching three passes before being forced to leave the game. Despite his early success in the game, the snowy conditions at Highmark Stadium made it difficult for the 49ers to recover from his absence.
Quarterback Brock Purdy expressed his frustration at losing such a valuable player, calling McCaffrey one of the best running backs in the league. Shanahan explained that McCaffrey appeared to injure himself after a promising 18-yard run in the second quarter, which was a disappointing turn of events considering his strong performance in practice leading up to the game.
This injury adds to McCaffrey’s already injury-riddled season, as he missed the first eight games of the season due to Achilles tendinitis. In the four games he has played, McCaffrey has accumulated 202 rushing yards and 15 catches for 146 yards, but has yet to score a touchdown.
The 49ers will now have to regroup and adjust their game plan without McCaffrey in the lineup. Shanahan indicated that PCL injuries typically require a few weeks of recovery, but the full extent of McCaffrey’s injury is still unclear.
As the team navigates the remainder of the season without one of their star players, fans and teammates alike will be eagerly awaiting updates on McCaffrey’s recovery. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
