Greenland’s prime minister says island cannot be bought, US has ‘not been respectful’

Greenland’s Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen has expressed his defiance towards U.S. President Donald Trump’s repeated comments about purchasing the Arctic island. In a joint press conference with Denmark’s Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, Nielsen stated that Greenland cannot be bought by just anyone and that the talks from the United States have been disrespectful.

Nielsen’s visit to Denmark comes at a time when political parties in Greenland are forming a new coalition government amidst Trump’s interest in acquiring the territory. Greenland, a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, has been leaning towards eventual independence from Denmark for years.

During the press conference, Frederiksen emphasized Denmark’s commitment to investing in the Greenlandic society, citing their historical ties and shared commonwealth. Nielsen’s visit aims to address future cooperation between Greenland and Denmark.

The possibility of a meeting involving Nielsen, Frederiksen, and Trump was also raised during the press conference. While Frederiksen expressed a willingness to meet with the American president, she emphasized Denmark’s approach to all parts of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Nielsen is scheduled to meet with Denmark’s King Frederik X before returning to Greenland with Frederiksen for a royal visit to the island. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
