Gerry Connolly announces cancer return, won’t run for re-election

Rep. Gerry Connolly, D-Va., made a heartbreaking announcement on Monday, revealing that his battle with cancer has taken a turn for the worse. The congressman shared that his esophageal cancer, which he had been fighting for the past six months, has returned. As a result, Connolly has made the difficult decision to step back from his leadership roles in Congress and will not seek re-election.

In a statement to his constituents, Connolly expressed his determination to continue representing them to the best of his ability despite his health challenges. He shared, “After grueling treatments, we’ve learned that my cancer, while initially beaten back, has now returned. I’ll do everything possible to continue to represent you and thank you for your grace.”

Acknowledging the sunset on his time in public service, Connolly announced that this would be his last term in Congress. He will be stepping down as the ranking member of the House Oversight Committee in the coming days. With a sense of pride in his accomplishments over 30 years, he emphasized that this final chapter would be approached with no rancor and a full heart.

The news of Connolly’s health setback prompted an outpouring of well-wishes and support from colleagues and friends. Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., praised Connolly for his dedication to public service, describing him as fiercely intelligent, deeply principled, and relentlessly committed to the people of Northern Virginia and the nation. Warner commended Connolly’s resilience and grit in facing cancer, highlighting his reputation as one of the toughest fighters he knows.

Currently serving his ninth term in the U.S. House of Representatives from Virginia’s 11th District, Connolly represents Fairfax County and its affluent suburbs near Washington, D.C. The 75-year-old congressman won his current term by defeating Republican Mike Van Meter, a Navy veteran and former FBI agent.

Connolly’s political career spans approximately three decades, starting with his election as a Fairfax County supervisor in 1995. In Congress, he has been a prominent figure in oversight investigations, playing a crucial role in holding government agencies accountable.

As Connolly navigates this challenging chapter in his life, his decision to prioritize his health and well-being is a reminder of the personal sacrifices public servants often make in the pursuit of their duties. The congressman’s legacy of service and dedication to his constituents will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact on Virginia politics.
