Amid Alberta referendum questions, Houston says Canada is better united

Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston recently addressed the topic of potential separation in Alberta, stating that while he hasn’t given much thought to the specific legislation introduced by Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, he believes that Canada is stronger when it remains united. In a news conference, Houston emphasized the importance of each province addressing its own challenges and responsibilities while striving to find the best path forward.

Smith’s government in Alberta has put forth legislation that would make it easier to bring a referendum question before the public, sparking discussions about the province potentially separating from Canada. Despite these developments, Houston reiterated his focus on maintaining a united Canada, stating that unity is crucial for the country’s strength.

In an effort to contribute to national unity, Houston highlighted his government’s commitment to advancing natural resource development opportunities in Nova Scotia. This includes lifting bans on uranium exploration and mining, hydraulic fracturing for onshore natural gas, and supporting the construction of a west-to-east pipeline to transport Alberta oil to New Brunswick refineries. Houston also emphasized the need to address interprovincial trade barriers to better support Western Canadians and promote economic growth across the country.

When asked about his stance on a potential referendum in Alberta compared to his previous criticisms of Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-François Blanchet’s comments about Canada, Houston emphasized his support for a united Canada. He noted the differences in approach, with Blanchet expressing disinterest in national unity and obstructing projects like pipelines, while Houston remains committed to a strong and united Canada.

Overall, Houston’s remarks underscore his belief in the importance of national unity and collaboration among provinces to address shared challenges and opportunities. By focusing on common goals and working together as a country, Houston aims to strengthen Canada and promote prosperity for all Canadians.
