Chicago mayor warns Trump’s policies echo Nazi playbook against working people

Chicago Democratic Mayor Brandon Johnson recently spoke out against the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and President Donald Trump’s economic policies during his weekly press availability. Drawing parallels between the Third Reich in Germany and Trump’s potential second term in the White House, Johnson expressed his concerns about the impact of these policies on working people and families in the United States.

Johnson emphasized that Chicago is the most “pro-worker” city in the country, but is facing hostility from Washington. He criticized President Trump for cutting off food supplies and medicine to working people, describing it as an “act of war.” Johnson called for bold leadership to stand up for working people who are struggling and suffering as a result of these policies.

In response to a question about working with the Trump administration, Johnson referenced Illinois Governor JB Pritzker’s warning about the dangers of authoritarianism. He compared Trump’s actions to those of the Nazi regime in Germany, noting the parallels in erasing culture and targeting specific groups of people.

Johnson highlighted the importance of resisting and fighting against these harmful policies, pointing out that Trump is undermining democracy and capturing the hopes and aspirations of working people. He criticized the administration’s efforts to dismantle federal agencies and slash funding for crucial programs, calling it unconstitutional.

Chicago has joined a lawsuit with other municipalities to stop DOGE’s efforts to cut federal bureaucracy. The city has already felt the impact of these cuts, with closures of clean energy operations and reductions in funding for essential programs. Johnson expressed concern about the potential consequences of these actions on low-income families and communities in Chicago.
