Biden’s Cabinet meetings described as overly ‘scripted’ in new book

Former President Joe Biden’s Cabinet meetings were revealed to be overly “scripted” in a new book by CNN anchor Jake Tapper and Axios political correspondent Alex Thompson titled “Original Sin.” The book outlines Biden’s alleged cognitive decline and his administration’s efforts to cover it up.

According to the authors, Cabinet members described the meetings as uncomfortable and lacking in substance from the very beginning. One member stated, “I don’t recall a great Cabinet meeting in terms of his presence. They were so scripted.” The White House’s speechwriters reportedly shortened Biden’s remarks and simplified his vocabulary to accommodate his “diminished capabilities.” As Biden’s one-term presidency progressed, aides noted that he became increasingly reliant on teleprompters and note cards, even during private conversations and Cabinet meetings.

Four Cabinet members interviewed by Tapper and Thompson described Biden’s meetings as excessively scripted. One secretary expressed disdain for the “scripts” used in Cabinet meetings, while another doubted Biden’s ability to run for re-election in 2022. The lack of genuine dialogue and authenticity in these meetings was a common complaint among participants.

Despite Biden’s struggles with speeches and reliance on notes, a speechwriter revealed that the administration eventually grew accustomed to these shortcomings. However, the behind-the-scenes reality painted a different picture than the White House’s official narrative. In a meeting with congressional leaders to discuss support for Ukraine against Russia’s invasion, Biden reportedly appeared lethargic and struggled to articulate his points, prompting criticism from attendees.

On the anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, Biden delivered a speech that was described as “weak” and “slurry.” He confused states and even his own Cabinet members, raising concerns among officials. As Biden’s inner circle reportedly shrank in 2023 and 2024, Cabinet members noted a decline in access to the president and questioned the motives behind this isolation.

Some Cabinet members suspected a deliberate strategy by the White House to limit Biden’s interactions with others and shape his decisions. Access to the president dwindled, leaving some officials shocked by his disorientation and lack of coherence in their limited interactions. The alleged cover-up of Biden’s cognitive decline and the inner circle’s role in managing his public appearances have been subjects of scrutiny dating back to his 2020 campaign.

Despite these revelations, a spokesperson for Biden did not respond to requests for comment on the book’s claims. The concerns raised by Tapper and Thompson shed light on the challenges faced by the Biden administration and the complexities of managing a presidency amid questions about the leader’s cognitive abilities.
