Jewish family discovers neighbor accused of firebombing pro-Israel rally

BOULDER, Colo. – The Costello family, a Jewish couple who recently moved to Colorado Springs, shared their harrowing experience of discovering that their neighbor, Mohamed Sabry Soliman, was suspected of firebombing a peaceful pro-Israel demonstration in Boulder. The FBI showed up at their doorstep to inform them of the incident, leaving them shocked and fearful.

David and Rivkah Costello recounted how they had met Soliman’s wife, who had come to their home with cupcakes as a housewarming gift. Unaware of their neighbor’s alleged terrorist activities, the Costellos were taken aback by the news and expressed gratitude that they were not targeted in the attack. The couple, who proudly display their Jewish identity with a mezuzah on their door, were relieved that they were not harmed.

The Costellos, who observe religious holidays without the use of phones or electronic devices, were unaware of the incident until after the holiday had passed. They were surprised to find themselves in the headlines and expressed their desire to live under the radar after leaving their previous neighborhood due to anti-Israel activism.

Soliman, who is currently in custody facing multiple charges, including attempted murder and federal hate crimes, admitted to planning the attack for over a year. The Costellos, who have five young children, expressed their fear of living across the street from someone accused of terrorism and emphasized the need for safety and security.

Despite the fear and uncertainty, the Costellos remain steadfast in their faith and commitment to standing up against antisemitism. They believe that staying visible and vocal about their beliefs is crucial in the face of adversity and hope that the rise of antisemitic sentiment does not force them to move again.
