Rapping, acting cameo in his mom’s movie among activities on Mamdani’s thin work resume

Zohran Mamdani’s recent victory over former New York governor Andrew Cuomo has been hailed as a win for the progressive wing of the Democratic Party. However, some Democrats are questioning Mamdani’s lack of substantial experience in public service and government, especially in comparison to Cuomo.
Cuomo criticized Mamdani’s resume, pointing out his limited experience in making government work and his lack of interaction with key political figures. Mamdani’s background reveals a series of short-term jobs and volunteer opportunities before joining the state assembly. After graduating from Bowdoin College, Mamdani worked as an organizer for MoveOn and TexPIRG before transitioning to political campaign work.
Mamdani’s campaign experience includes working on City Council and District Attorney campaigns, as well as managing Ross Barkan’s State Senate bid. He also briefly worked at a foreclosure prevention community group, Chhaya, before running for the New York State Assembly seat in Astoria.
Critics have raised concerns about Mamdani’s record in the state assembly, noting that he missed a significant number of votes in 2025 and only passed three bills into law during his three-year tenure. Despite this, Mamdani has been praised for his digital marketing skills, particularly on platforms like TikTok.
During a recent mayoral debate, candidates were asked about their regrets in politics, with State Sen. Jessica Ramos jokingly expressing regret for not running for mayor in 2021 and highlighting the importance of effective digital campaigning.
If Mamdani wins the general election, he would become the city’s youngest leader since 1917 at 34 years old. Fox News Digital reached out to the Mamdani campaign for comment but did not receive a response.
Overall, Mamdani’s victory represents a shift towards a new generation of leaders within the Democratic Party, but questions remain about his readiness to lead New York City. Only time will tell if Mamdani can translate his grassroots organizing experience into effective governance at the city level.
