Canadian dies while in ICE custody in Florida, U.S. agency says

Canadian Citizen Dies in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Custody

Tragedy struck earlier this week as a Canadian citizen, Johnny Noviello, passed away while in the custody of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in Florida. The 49-year-old’s death is shrouded in mystery, as the cause has yet to be determined and is currently under investigation.

Despite holding Canadian citizenship, Noviello had been residing in the United States since 1988 and obtained lawful permanent resident status in 1991. However, his life took a turn in 2023 when he was convicted of various crimes, including racketeering and drug trafficking, resulting in a 12-month prison sentence.

ICE agents apprehended Noviello in May, and he was detained while awaiting removal proceedings, as stated in the agency’s news release. The Canadian government has been contacted for a response on this unfortunate incident.

This incident occurs amidst a backdrop of increased ICE activities across the country. President Donald Trump’s stringent immigration policies have led to a surge in arrests, with White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller advocating for a significant daily arrest quota. Trump himself has urged ICE to carry out mass deportations, setting a historical precedent in the enforcement of immigration laws.
