Security experts warn of Putin’s ‘upper hand’ as US halts Ukraine defensive aid

The Pentagon’s recent decision to halt promised air defense systems to Ukraine has sparked concern among security experts in Washington, who fear that the move could embolden Russian President Vladimir Putin and potentially escalate the conflict in the region.
The decision, which was confirmed by Fox News, was made due to dangerously low munitions stockpiles in the U.S. This move has raised alarms among experts who believe it undermines both U.S. and Ukrainian leverage as President Donald Trump seeks to broker a ceasefire deal.
John Hardie, deputy director of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies’ Russia Program, expressed support for putting American warfighters first but warned that halting the promised weapons to Ukraine could reinforce Putin’s belief that he has the upper hand, making him more intransigent in his actions.
The weapons that were set to be delivered to Ukraine, including missile interceptors and 155 mm ammunition shells, were already staged in Poland before the Pentagon reversed its decision. This comes at a time when Russia has significantly increased its offensive in the region, launching mass drone attacks on Ukrainian cities.
Clifford May, founder and president of FDD, emphasized that cutting off or slowing munitions to Ukraine could encourage Putin to continue and escalate the offensive, rather than seeking peace. He urged President Trump to consider the consequences of this decision and its impact on the ongoing conflict.
Ukraine also expressed concerns over the halt in weapon shipments, warning that it could embolden the aggressor and hinder efforts to secure a ceasefire. The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry called on the U.S. to continue supporting Ukraine’s defense capabilities to deter further aggression from Russia.
As Russia continues its attacks on Ukraine and amasses troops along the border, fears of another ground offensive loom large. Special Envoy to Ukraine Gen. Keith Kellogg’s response to the Pentagon’s decision and its potential impact on ceasefire attempts remains unknown.
The situation in Ukraine remains tense as both sides navigate the complexities of the conflict. The decision to halt weapon shipments to Ukraine could have far-reaching consequences, and it is crucial for all parties involved to consider the implications of their actions in the pursuit of peace and stability in the region.
