Adopt-A-School: Please help us fill needy kids' stomaches

Relate Church volunteers recently gathered to prepare food parcels for distribution to needy children and families in north Surrey. This act of kindness is part of the ongoing effort to support those who are struggling to make ends meet, especially during the challenging times brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Vancouver Sun’s Adopt-A-School campaign has been instrumental in providing financial assistance to schools across B.C. to ensure that children have access to food and clothing. Over the years, millions of dollars have been raised to help feed and clothe children in need, making a significant impact on the lives of many families.

As the new school year approaches, the need for support is expected to be even greater. Reports from teachers across the province have highlighted the growing number of children arriving at school hungry or lacking proper clothing. Families who rely on social assistance or minimum wage jobs are finding it increasingly difficult to provide for their children.

Principal Sam le Riche of Old Yale Road elementary in Surrey has witnessed firsthand the struggles faced by families in the Whalley area. The school has become a place of refuge for many in need, with students, parents, and even the homeless coming in search of food. Despite the challenges, le Riche is committed to helping those in need, ensuring that no child goes hungry.

In partnership with Relate Church, the school has been able to provide food parcels to families in need. The church has raised funds to support this initiative, delivering food parcels to homes in the area twice a month. The impact of this support is evident in the joy and gratitude expressed by the families who receive the much-needed assistance.
