DoD civilians volunteer for Trump’s border security mission within 48 hours

The Department of Defense (DoD) is seeing a surge in civilian volunteers stepping up to support operations at the southern border. Following President Donald Trump’s directive to enhance border security, nearly 500 DoD civilians have volunteered for temporary details with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
These volunteers, with skills ranging from intelligence analysis to detention support, are answering the call of duty in under 48 hours. Assignments are available through USAJOBS.com, with recruiting agencies such as Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) seeking assistance.
According to Deputy Assistant Defense Secretary for Civilian Personnel Policy Michael A. Cogar, the national security problem at the border requires the critical skill sets that DoD civilians possess. Assignments last up to 180 days, providing much-needed support to DHS operations.
The initiative reflects President Trump’s “whole-of-government approach” to removing national security threats, including gang members and terrorists. DoD civilians who volunteer for temporary ICE assignments will help make America safe again and remove these threats from the country.
Civilian employees were notified via email and can apply through USAJOBS. If approved, candidates can be deployed within 96 hours. Assignments last up to six months, with roles currently running through September 30, 2026. Volunteers will provide logistical and technical support, maintaining their pay and benefits while gaining valuable cross-agency experience.
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s directive also opened DHS placements for retiring service members through the SkillBridge program. This program allows retiring service members to gain real-world training and work experience in in-demand fields.
The mission is critical not just for DHS and DoD, but for the entire country. Each volunteer has a force-multiplying effect, allowing DHS agents to focus on their core missions while receiving the technical support they need.
The dedication of DoD civilians to support border security efforts highlights the commitment to national security and the safety of the American people. Through their willingness to volunteer and serve, these individuals play a crucial role in protecting the nation.
