Drugs for weight loss can reduce the symptoms of Hidradenitis suppurativa, find research

Fox News has reported that GLP-1 weight loss and diabetes medications, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, have been found to alleviate symptoms of a painful skin condition known as Hidradenitis suppurativa, also called acne inversa. This condition causes small, painful nodules to develop under the skin, particularly in areas where the skin rubs together, and can be recurrent.

According to Mayo Clinic, Hidradenitis suppurativa typically begins after puberty and before the age of 40, with women being three times more likely to develop the condition. Medical and surgical treatments can help manage the condition and prevent complications.

A recent study published in Jama Dermatology examined the impact of GLP-1 medications on Hidradenitis suppurativa. Researchers noted that the condition is often associated with overweight and obesity, affecting half of all patients. Weight loss, whether through diet or bariatric surgery, has been shown to have a positive effect on the skin condition.

The study included 66 patients with Hidradenitis suppurativa who were treated with a GLP-1 drug for an average of 18.5 months. Nearly 90% of the participants had diabetes, and the average BMI was 39.4. After six months of treatment, 54% of patients experienced a reduction in symptoms, with 67% reporting improvements at the last follow-up.

Dr. Brendan Camp, a dermatologist in New York, cautiously welcomed the study’s findings, acknowledging the significant improvements in severity, inflammation, and pain seen in patients who were obese and had diabetes. He highlighted the potential anti-inflammatory properties of GLP-1 medications that could benefit skin conditions.

However, Camp cautioned that the study’s retrospective design limits causal conclusions, and further randomized clinical trials are needed to determine the safety and effectiveness of GLP-1 medications for Hidradenitis suppurativa in a broader population. He emphasized that GLP-1 therapies are not currently approved for this indication and should only be considered under the supervision of a dermatologist and prescribing provider.

While the study shows promising results, more research is needed to fully understand the potential benefits of GLP-1 medications for Hidradenitis suppurativa. Patients are advised to consult with their healthcare providers before considering off-label use of these drugs for skin conditions.
