Wealthsimple client data, including SINs, accessed in security breach

Wealthsimple Security Breach Exposes Client Data
Wealthsimple has reported a security breach on Saturday that resulted in the leak of sensitive data belonging to some of its clients. The compromised information includes social insurance numbers, financial details such as account numbers, government IDs provided during the signup process, and IP addresses.
Despite the breach, Wealthsimple assured its clients that no funds were stolen and all accounts remain secure. The company acted swiftly to contain the issue and launched a thorough investigation with the help of external experts.
According to Wealthsimple, the breach was caused by a compromise in third-party software, which allowed unauthorized access to customer data. However, the company did not disclose the name of the software provider in question.
Impact on Clients and Response
Wealthsimple stated that less than one percent of its approximately three million clients were affected by the breach. The company has already contacted those impacted and assured that any clients who did not receive an email notification were not affected.
The company issued an apology to those whose data was accessed and acknowledged the anxiety such threats can cause. In response to the breach, Wealthsimple has implemented enhanced security measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
As a gesture of goodwill, Wealthsimple is offering affected clients two years of free credit and dark-web monitoring, along with insurance and identity theft protection.
