A California woman has been charged with illegally registering her dog to vote and casting two ballots under the canine’s name.

Laura Lee Yourex, a 62-year-old resident of Costa Mesa, is facing five felony charges, including perjury and casting a ballot when not entitled to vote, according to the Orange County District Attorney’s Office.

Yourex allegedly submitted mail-in ballots under her dog’s name, Maya Jean Yourex, during the 2021 gubernatorial recall election and the 2022 primary.

The recall ballot was counted, but the primary ballot was rejected. Yourex reported herself to authorities after posting about her dog’s voting activity on social media.

In a social media post, Yourex shared a photo of her dog wearing an “I Voted” sticker and posing with a ballot. She also posted about receiving a mail-in ballot for her deceased dog, Maya.

If convicted on all counts, Yourex could face up to six years in prison. The District Attorney’s Office did not disclose which party received the fraudulent votes.

California voter registration requires eligible voters to provide identifiable information and affirm their citizenship under penalty of perjury. While proof of residence is not required for state elections, first-time federal election voters must provide proof of residence and registration.
