Bondi vows appeal after Comey, James indictments dismissed by judge

Former FBI Director James Comey and New York Attorney General Letitia James have been cleared of criminal charges by U.S. District Judge Cameron Currie, who ruled that the prosecutor who brought the cases, Lindsey Halligan, was unlawfully appointed. The judge agreed with Comey’s defense that Halligan’s appointment as interim U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia was invalid, rendering the indictments defective.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi has demanded legal action against Comey and James, vowing to take all available legal measures, including an immediate appeal, to hold them accountable for their alleged unlawful conduct. Bondi, speaking at an event in Memphis, emphasized that Comey’s actions were a betrayal of public trust.

Comey was indicted in September 2025 on charges of making false statements to Congress and obstructing a congressional inquiry related to the FBI’s Crossfire Hurricane investigation into possible ties between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russia. Comey has denied any wrongdoing, calling the case a “political hit job.”

Letitia James was separately indicted in October 2025 on mortgage and bank-fraud counts, accused of misrepresenting a home purchase in Virginia to secure more favorable loan terms. Prosecutors allege she benefited by nearly $19,000 over the life of the loan.

Defense teams for both Comey and James have argued that the prosecutions were flawed, citing procedural irregularities and Halligan’s disputed appointment. Halligan, a former Trump legal aide, was the only federal prosecutor to sign Comey’s indictment.

In response to the judge’s ruling, Bondi defended Halligan’s credentials and role, expressing confidence in her abilities as a special U.S. attorney. Bondi praised Halligan as an excellent prosecutor and vowed to continue fighting for justice through the legal process.
