Man accused of three murders in Sudbury escapes from local jail: police

SUDBURY, Ont. – Police in northeastern Ontario say a man charged with three murders in the Sudbury area in recent months has escaped from the local jail.

Greater Sudbury Police shared little information about when 33-year-old Joel Roy is believed to have fled the facility, but released details of his escape on Saturday evening. Staff Sergeant Sherry Young says he will remain at large as of Sunday night.

Police say Roy was in custody in connection with three recent murders, none of which have yet gone to trial.

Previous police press reports indicate that in December 2022, Roy was charged with two first-degree murders following an alleged shooting at a local hotel.

Police filed an additional, unrelated charge against him in April after the body of a man who had been reported missing months earlier turned up in a wooded area near the city.

Police say Roy, whom they warn the public not to approach, is five feet five and weighs 150 pounds with an average build. They say he has shoulder-length light brown hair that can be tied back in a ponytail, green eyes, a scar on his right cheek, and tattoos on his chest and right forearm.

This report from The Canadian Press was first published on June 18, 2023.
