The Nova Scotia police watchdog has charged a Cape Breton Regional Police officer with one count of assault resulting in bodily harm.

The independent Serious Incident Response Team issued a statement on Friday saying it was approached on May 7 by police investigating an alleged assault committed by an off-duty officer in the Sydney area.

No details have been released about what happened.

The team then launched its own investigation, which found that charges were warranted.

Const. Curtis MacDonald appeared in Sydney Provincial Court on July 6. He will appear again on August 24.

SIRT is responsible for investigating all serious incidents involving police in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
