Angus L. Macdonald Bridge closed to vehicle traffic this weekend

The Angus L. Macdonald Bridge will be closed to vehicle traffic this weekend, beginning Friday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. local time and ending Monday, Sept. 16 at 5:30 a.m.

Halifax Harbour Bridges said in a news release the closure is to allow for planned maintenance work that can’t be done while the bridge is open to traffic.

It includes the replacement of bearings that help “mitigate the destructive effects of shock and vibration caused by traffic.”

Halifax Harbour Bridges noted that work ends its multi-year program to replace bearings used in the original construction of the 69-year-old bridge.

Other work being done includes line painting, guardrail welding and work at the toll plaza.

While the bridge is closed to vehicles, the bike lane and pedestrian walkway will remain open. Halifax Harbour Bridges said there might be “short, intermittent delays.”

“If necessary, pedestrians and cyclists will be directed to stop and allowed to proceed when it is safe to do so,” Halifax Harbour Bridges said.
