Canada’s Rachel Homan edges Korea to win Pan Continental final
Rachel Homan’s Ottawa Team Wins Women’s Pan Continental Curling Championship
Rachel Homan’s Ottawa team, consisting of vice-skip Tracy Fleury, second Emma Miskew, and lead Sarah Wilkes, stole a single point in the 10th end to secure a 6-5 victory over South Korea and claim the women’s Pan Continental Curling Championship on Saturday night.
In the round-robin play, Homan’s Canadian squad had previously defeated Eunji Gim and the Korean team with a convincing 8-2 win on Wednesday.
The final match saw both Canada and South Korea exchanging deuces in the first two ends, with Canada taking a 3-2 lead after a steal of one in the fifth end. Singles were traded in the sixth and seventh ends, and South Korea managed to score a deuce in the eighth end to lead 5-4. With Canada only scoring one point in the ninth end, Homan’s team had to steal a point to secure the victory, which they successfully achieved.
“We definitely had to stay together. We were just a little bit on the wrong side of the inch on a couple of those through the game and kept battling through. We knew it would take 10 ends to beat them and we got a couple of mistakes from them late that we could capitalize on,” Homan commented after the game.
Homan curled an impressive 89% in the final, while Gim finished at 75%.
In the bronze medal match, Rui Wang and her team from China defeated Miyu Ueno’s team from Japan with a score of 7-3.
Reflecting on their victory, Homan expressed her excitement, “We’ve never played in this before and we know that Canada hasn’t been in that gold-medal game, so it’s nice to represent Canada, to be here and take home the gold. It’s just really exciting that we’re able to do that again with the Maple Leaf on our back. It’s something we never take for granted, and we’re grateful to be able to put on these jerseys. We’re so proud.”
