The Netherlands’ Abdi Nageeye and Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui Triumph at the New York City Marathon

The New York City Marathon witnessed some thrilling races on Sunday, with Abdi Nageeye from the Netherlands emerging victorious in the men’s event and Sheila Chepkirui from Kenya claiming the top spot in the women’s race.

Nageeye showcased his strength and speed by outpacing 2022 winner Evans Chebet in the final stages of the race, crossing the finish line in a time of 2:07.39, just six seconds ahead of Chebet.

The race saw a fierce battle among a group of six top runners in the last 10 miles, with each contender pushing the pace. Defending champion Tamarit Tola was part of this group but lost ground with five miles remaining, ultimately finishing in fourth place. Albert Korir of Kenya secured third place on the men’s podium.

In the women’s race, Chepkirui delivered a stunning performance by surging ahead of defending champion Hellen Obiri right before the finish line. Chepkirui completed the race in 2:24.35, asserting herself as one of the favorites, while Obiri finished nearly 15 seconds behind. Vivian Cheruiyot completed the all-Kenyan podium by taking third place.

The men’s wheelchair race saw a shift in dominance as USA’s Daniel Romanchuk claimed victory, ending Marcel Hug’s 16-race winning streak at the event. British athlete David Weir secured second place, with Japan’s Tomoki Suzuki closely following in third after an intense sprint finish.

On the women’s wheelchair side, American Susannah Scaroni dominated the race, finishing more than 10 minutes ahead of her competitors. This marked a historic moment as both American athletes, Romanchuk and Scaroni, emerged victorious in the wheelchair races.

Reflecting on her win, Scaroni shared, “It’s always special to compete in New York City. I felt great today and never take it for granted. The tailwind during the final hill gave me an extra boost of energy that helped me secure the win.”
