Purcell strikes gold at Canadian mixed curling championship
Owen Purcell leads Halifax Curling Club to Canadian Mixed Curling Championship Gold
Owen Purcell and his Halifax Curling Club team started the week strong, but they saved their best performance for last. Purcell, along with third Christina Black, second Adam McEachren, and lead Jennifer Baxter, emerged victorious in the gold-medal final of the Canadian mixed curling championship, defeating Jason Ackerman’s Highland Curling Club team from Regina with a score of 5-4.
In a thrilling final match, Ackerman managed to tie the game at 4-4 with a single in the seventh end. However, Purcell remained composed and made no mistake with the hammer in the eighth end to secure the win and claim the championship title.
Ackerman’s runner-up team, consisting of third Amber Holland, second Sam Wills, and lead Colleen Ackerman, put up a strong fight throughout the tournament but fell short in the final showdown against Purcell’s team.
Meanwhile, Kurt Alan Balderston from Grande Prairie, Alberta, clinched the bronze medal by defeating Ryan Wiebe’s Winnipeg team with a commanding score of 9-4 in seven ends in the third-place final. Balderston took an early lead by scoring a deuce in the first end, followed by a stolen single in the second end, and a three-point count in the fourth end, ultimately seizing control of the game and securing the bronze medal.
The Canadian mixed curling championship provided an exciting week of intense competition, with teams showcasing their skills and determination on the ice. Congratulations to Owen Purcell and his Halifax Curling Club team for their impressive performance and well-deserved victory in the championship final.
