Striking postal workers in N.S. say they’d rather not be on the picket line

Employees with the Canadian Union of Postal Workers are currently on strike outside the Canada Post mail processing plant in Sydney, N.S., in a bid for better wages and improved working conditions. Despite the unpleasant weather, the workers are standing strong on the picket line, with shop steward Alex Pappas expressing their reluctance to be there.

Pappas emphasized that the workers’ main goal is to secure fair wages and return to work. The union represents 55,000 workers across various mail carrier units, all of whom are participating in the strike action. While Canada Post has offered a wage increase of 11.5% over four years, the workers are pushing for double that amount, citing the rising cost of living as a major concern.

According to Pappas, the decision to strike was a last resort after failed negotiations at the bargaining table. Despite efforts to reach a compromise, the union felt compelled to take action due to what they perceive as unfair treatment during negotiations. Both parties were still engaged in talks as of midday Friday, indicating a desire to find a resolution.

In addition to the wage dispute, the union has proposed revenue-boosting ideas for Canada Post, such as the implementation of electric vehicle charging stations, postal banking services, and incorporating wellness checks for seniors during mail deliveries. However, delays in implementing these changes have added to the tension between the union and the Crown corporation.

The Nova Scotia government has stepped in to offer support and assistance to individuals affected by the strike. Measures have been put in place to ensure that essential services, such as federal benefit cheques, are still delivered. Community Services caseworkers will be reaching out to clients who receive cheques directly to make arrangements for pickup.

Furthermore, Nova Scotia Health is working to minimize disruptions to its services by utilizing alternative communication methods for appointment notices. Elections Nova Scotia is advising voters to avoid mailing write-in ballots and to contact returning offices for alternative arrangements.

As the strike continues, both the union and Canada Post remain committed to finding a resolution that satisfies the needs of all parties involved. The impact of the strike is being closely monitored, with efforts being made to mitigate any potential disruptions to essential services.
