Already, two hotels-turned-migrant shelters in Manhattan and Queens have closed, with 10 more facilities across the state set to follow suit by December 31. These shelters, located in various counties, were established by the city to accommodate the overwhelming influx of migrants and asylum seekers.

Mayor Eric Adams’ office revealed that over 223,000 migrants have been assisted since the spring of 2022, with a significant portion of the city’s budget allocated towards their care. The closure of these shelters is attributed to the declining number of migrants arriving in New York, a trend that has been supported by federal government initiatives and executive orders issued by the Biden-Harris administration.

Despite the positive impact of these closures on taxpayers and the city’s resources, concerns have been raised by activists regarding the eviction of migrant adults from shelters after 30 days. A group of protesters disrupted a City Hall hearing to voice their opposition to this policy, citing it as cruel and destabilizing.

As the Trump administration prepares to take office, there are fears that migrants may attempt a last-minute border crossing before stricter measures are implemented. Trump has pledged to tighten border security, increase deportations, and end parole programs that allow migrants to enter through lawful pathways.
