Canadian speed skater Ivanie Blondin showcased her talent and versatility at the long-track speed skating World Cup in Nagano, Japan, earning two medals for Team Canada. Blondin secured a silver in the women’s mass start and a bronze in the mixed gender relay with teammate Yankun Zhao, contributing to Canada’s total of four medals over the weekend.
Blondin’s strategic approach in the women’s mass start proved to be successful as she skillfully navigated the front pack of skaters while conserving her energy for the final sprint. Blondin expressed her excitement about sharing this special moment with Zhao, highlighting their adaptability and background in short track speed skating.
In addition to Blondin’s success, Canada’s women’s and men’s team pursuit squads delivered strong performances, securing the fifth and fourth fastest times in the field, respectively. Laurent Dubreuil of Levis, Que., also showcased his skills with a fourth-place finish in the 500-meter event.
Looking ahead, key dates for the World Cup circuit include upcoming events in Calgary, Milwaukee, Zakopane (Poland), and Heerenveen (Netherlands). The World single distance championships in Hamar, Norway, are also set to take place in February.
Overall, Ivanie Blondin’s impressive performance at the Nagano World Cup solidifies her as a key player for Team Canada in the world of long-track speed skating. Her dedication, skill, and adaptability continue to make her a formidable force on the ice, inspiring fans and fellow athletes alike.
