Extra federal spending on RCMP, military, agriculture good for Manitoba amid Trump tariff threat, premier says

Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew is committed to playing a key role in a unified Team Canada approach to strengthen the relationship with the new American administration, while also focusing on leading Manitoba. Kinew emphasized the importance of direct and mature communication with leaders such as Donald Trump and Justin Trudeau, as well as counterparts at the state and provincial levels.

During a virtual meeting with other first ministers, including Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Kinew highlighted the need for a clear strategy in dealing with China and ensuring a strong voice for agriculture, which he described as the backbone of Manitoba’s economy. He also called for increased investment in the RCMP and law enforcement to address issues like drug trafficking in communities.

The premier emphasized the importance of Canada increasing defense spending to meet NATO targets, which would benefit military bases in Manitoba like CFB Shilo and 17 Wing in Winnipeg. Additionally, Kinew pointed out the positive impact that increased military investment would have on Manitoba’s aerospace industry.

Looking ahead, Kinew plans to reconvene with other first ministers for a trip to Washington, D.C. following Trump’s inauguration in January. He also stressed the importance of building bilateral relationships with governor counterparts on Capitol Hill to reaffirm Canada’s allyship with the U.S.

Kinew expressed gratitude for the guidance of former Manitoba premier Gary Doer, who served as Canada’s ambassador to the U.S. from 2009 to 2016. He sees Doer’s involvement as a valuable asset for Team Manitoba in addressing the province’s priorities, including job creation and community safety.

In conclusion, Premier Wab Kinew is actively working to navigate the challenges posed by the new American administration while prioritizing the needs of Manitobans. By advocating for increased military spending, cracking down on crime, and fostering strong international relationships, Kinew aims to protect and promote the interests of Manitoba on a national and global scale.
