Bears coach Matt Eberflus explains decision to not call timeout in final seconds as fans clamor for firing

The Chicago Bears faced a tough loss against the Detroit Lions on Thanksgiving Day, with the game ending in a 23-20 victory for the Lions. The Bears had a chance to tie or win the game in the final moments, but a series of questionable decisions ultimately led to their defeat.
Quarterback Caleb Williams was sacked with 32 seconds left on the clock, but the Bears did not use their timeout to stop the clock. Instead, Williams hiked the ball with just seven seconds remaining and threw an incomplete pass to wide receiver Rome Odunze as time expired.
Many fans took to social media to express their frustration with Bears head coach Matt Eberflus for not calling a timeout in the crucial moments of the game. However, Eberflus defended his decision, stating that Williams had waited too long to start the play. Eberflus had wanted the ball hiked with around 18 seconds left, but there was a delay of 11 seconds.
This loss marked the sixth consecutive defeat for the Bears, with the last two losses coming by the margin of a field goal against NFC North rivals. On the other hand, the Lions improved to 11-1, their best start in franchise history.
Quarterback Jared Goff led the Lions to victory with two touchdown passes to tight end Sam LaPorta. Goff completed 21 of 34 passes for 221 yards, with wide receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown leading the team with 73 yards on five receptions.
Meanwhile, Williams showed promise in the second half, finishing with 256 yards and three touchdown passes. Keenan Allen contributed 73 yards, while DJ Moore added 97 yards to the Bears’ offense.
Despite the disappointing loss, the Bears will look to regroup and bounce back in their upcoming games. As for the Lions, they continue to make franchise history with their impressive 11-1 record.
