Landmark Acadian church in Nova Scotia faces destruction as rescue efforts fail

Église Sainte-Marie in Clare, a 120-year-old wooden church, is on the verge of being demolished unless a last-minute miracle intervenes. Built between 1903 and 1905 by Acadian volunteers, this historic church was designated as a provincial heritage property in 2001 and listed on the Canadian register in 2006.

Unfortunately, the ravages of time and weather have taken a toll on the structure, leading to repair costs in the millions that the dwindling congregation could not afford. The church held its final Mass in 2019 and has since been deconsecrated, standing as a reminder of a bygone era.

Efforts to save the church were made by the community through the formation of the Société Édifice Sainte-Marie de La Pointe. Despite an anonymous donor offering $10 million earlier this year, the funds were subsequently withdrawn, leaving the fate of the church in uncertainty. In October, the Archdiocese of Halifax-Yarmouth made the difficult decision to proceed with the demolition of the church.

Pierre Comeau, the former president of the society, expressed sadness over the deteriorating state of the building. He acknowledged that the church’s potential demolition would be a somber moment for the community, considering its significance as a monument to the faith and perseverance of their ancestors.

On the other hand, Emma Lang, the executive director of Heritage Trust of Nova Scotia, remains hopeful that the church can be saved. She emphasized the importance of following the proper process for demolishing a provincially registered structure, which includes obtaining permission from the Advisory Council on Heritage Property and the minister.

Lang advocated for deconstruction as a preferred approach over demolition, as it allows for the reuse of materials and the documentation of the building’s construction. The loss of the church would not only impact the community but also the descendants of those who worshipped and celebrated important life events within its walls.

As the fate of Église Sainte-Marie hangs in the balance, the community and heritage advocates continue to seek alternatives to preserve this cherished landmark. The church’s rich history and cultural significance serve as a poignant reminder of the enduring legacy left by those who came before us.
