New Jersey’s Andy Kim to be sworn into Senate early to Menendez’s old seat
Democratic Senator-elect Andy Kim was appointed to the upper chamber of Congress early on Sunday, following his victory in last month’s election. New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy, also a Democrat, announced the appointment after the official certification of the 2024 election results by the state board of canvassers and the resignation of Senator George Helmy on Thursday. Helmy, a former chief of staff to Murphy, had been appointed to the Senate in September after Senator Bob Menendez resigned due to a federal corruption trial.
Kim’s victory over GOP businessman Curtis Bashaw by nearly 10 percentage points in November’s election marked a significant milestone for New Jersey. Governor Murphy praised Kim for making history as the first Asian American Senator from New Jersey and the first Korean American Senator in the nation. He expressed his confidence in Kim’s ability to serve the people of New Jersey effectively and highlighted his commitment to lowering costs, defending freedoms, and building a stronger and fairer state.
Senator-elect Andy Kim expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to represent the state that had given his family the chance at the American Dream in the U.S. Senate. He acknowledged the ongoing challenges faced by many residents in achieving that dream and pledged to fight for their interests from day one. Kim thanked Governor Murphy and Senator Helmy for facilitating a smooth transition and expressed his eagerness to begin working for the people of New Jersey.
In his resignation statement, Senator Helmy commended Kim’s dedication, character, and empathy towards the people of New Jersey. He highlighted his own accomplishments during his brief tenure, including introducing and co-sponsoring numerous bills, maintaining a perfect voting record, advocating for youth mental health, and securing nominations for New Jersey candidates to the United States Military Academies.
Senator Menendez’s resignation came after his conviction in a federal corruption trial, where he was found guilty on all 16 counts. The allegations included accepting bribes in exchange for using his influence to interfere in state and federal investigations. Menendez has since requested a new trial and the dismissal of his conviction, citing improper evidence viewed by jurors during deliberations.
The appointment of Senator-elect Andy Kim to the U.S. Senate represents a new chapter in New Jersey’s political landscape. With a strong commitment to serving the people and advocating for their interests, Kim is poised to make a positive impact in the upper chamber of Congress.
