US swaps prisoners with China, releasing 3 convicted spies

As a reader of Fox News, you may have come across an article detailing a recent prisoner swap involving two Chinese spies and a Chinese national charged with disseminating child pornography. This exchange took place as President Biden’s term nears its end, culminating in the release of three wrongfully detained Americans from Chinese custody.

On November 22, Biden granted clemency to Yanjun Xu, Ji Chaoqun, and Shanlin Jin, as part of the prisoner swap that saw the return of Mark Swidan, Kai Li, and John Leung to the United States before Thanksgiving. Swidan, Li, and Leung had been detained in China under questionable charges, with Swidan facing drug-related accusations that the U.N. deemed illegitimate.

Xu and Chaoqun, both Chinese nationals, were convicted of espionage in the U.S. Xu, the first Chinese government intelligence officer ever to be extradited to the United States, was sentenced to 20 years for his role in targeting American aviation companies and soliciting proprietary information on behalf of the Chinese government. Chaoqun, on the other hand, was convicted of acting as an agent of China’s Ministry of State Security without notifying the U.S. attorney general and lying about his contacts with foreign agencies.

Jin, the Chinese national charged with possessing over 47,000 images of child pornography, was also part of the prisoner swap. He was serving his sentence after being convicted while a doctoral student at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.

President Biden’s decision to commute the sentences of 1,499 individuals and pardon 39 others convicted of non-violent crimes has sparked controversy as President-elect Trump prepares to take office in a little over a month. Trump has indicated his intention to pardon those involved in the January 6, 2021, Capitol riot upon assuming the presidency.
