Christian leader in Lebanon urges US, allies to intervene to stop Hezbollah
The head of a political party and a Christian coalition group in Lebanon is urging the U.S. and its Western allies to take action and deploy deterrent forces to permanently dismantle Hezbollah. Ibrahim Mrad, president of the Universal Syriac Union Party and secretary general of the Lebanese Christian Front, emphasized the importance of international intervention to address the threat posed by the terrorist group supported by Iran.
In an exclusive interview with Fox News Digital, Mrad highlighted the need for the U.S., the U.K., and Germany to send troops in coordination with the United Nations to work alongside the Lebanese army in dismantling Hezbollah. He expressed concerns that any delay in taking action could lead to an increase in Hezbollah’s power, making it even more challenging to dismantle the group in the future.
Following a recent cease-fire agreement between Israel and Hezbollah, reports from U.S. intelligence officials suggested that Hezbollah has not made any efforts to dismantle its military operations in Lebanon as agreed upon. Instead, the group is believed to be recruiting new members and attempting to rearm through domestic production and smuggling efforts. This has raised concerns about the sustainability of the cease-fire and the potential for Hezbollah to rebuild its forces.
The Christian Front, led by Mrad, has called on the Lebanese government to request the deployment of international forces amid concerns that the cease-fire may fail. Mrad emphasized that while a majority of the country does not support Hezbollah, the government and army lack the strength to completely dismantle the group or prevent future threats to Israel. He highlighted the need for international support to enforce previous U.N. resolutions aimed at disarming militia groups in Lebanon.
Mrad also expressed his belief that targeting civilians would be a mistake and could turn public opinion against Israel. He urged Jerusalem to avoid taking actions that could harm innocent civilians and instead focus on dismantling Hezbollah without causing collateral damage.
As tensions continue to escalate in the region, the call for international intervention to address the Hezbollah threat remains crucial. The deployment of deterrent forces and the enforcement of U.N. resolutions could be key in preventing further conflict and promoting stability in Lebanon and the wider Middle East.
