Musical icon Zakir Hussain has died at 73. This is the advice he said changed his career
Renowned Indian musician Zakir Hussain passed away at the age of 73 after battling idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, a chronic lung disease. Born in Mumbai in 1951 to legendary tabla artist Alla Rakha, Hussain was introduced to the art of playing the tabla at a young age by his father, who was also known as Ustad Alla Rakha.
Hussain’s deep connection to music began even before he was born, as his father would sing tabla rhythms to him as a newborn instead of traditional prayers. This early exposure to music laid the foundation for his future as a musical prodigy. By the age of 12, he was already touring and performing alongside some of India’s classical music legends.
Throughout his illustrious career spanning six decades, Hussain collaborated with renowned musicians such as George Harrison, Charles Lloyd, Mickey Hart, and Yo-Yo Ma. One pivotal moment in his career came during a conversation with George Harrison, who encouraged Hussain to infuse his unique tabla playing style with elements of rock music, setting him on a path to becoming a “window to the rhythm world.”
In 1973, Hussain co-founded the Indian jazz fusion band Shakti with guitarist John McLaughlin, introducing a new sound that combined Indian classical music with jazz influences. His groundbreaking work earned him three Grammy awards in 2024, making him the first Indian musician to achieve such a feat in a single year.
Aside from his musical achievements, Hussain was also known for his kindness and grace. His interactions with journalists and audiences alike reflected his humble and respectful demeanor. In 2023, he received the prestigious Padma Vibhushan award, India’s second-highest civilian honor, in recognition of his contributions to Indian classical music.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Hussain as a true genius who revolutionized the world of Indian classical music and brought the tabla to the global stage. Hussain’s legacy as a cultural ambassador and master musician continues to inspire generations of musicians worldwide.
Zakir Hussain is survived by his wife and two daughters, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy as one of the greatest musicians of all time. His impact on the world of music and his dedication to his craft will be remembered and cherished by all who had the privilege of experiencing his artistry.
