Canadian women Thompson, Sherret, Schmidt sweep World Cup ski cross podium

A Canadian has continued to dominate the women’s ski cross World Cup season with Marielle Thompson of Whistler, B.C., claiming victory in the first three races. However, in a remarkable turn of events, Thompson was joined on the podium in Arosa, Switzerland by her teammates India Sherret and Hannah Schmidt.

Thompson showcased her skill and experience as she pulled away from the competition to secure her 33rd World Cup victory and 70th medal overall. Reflecting on the Canadian sweep, Thompson expressed her delight at her teammates’ strong performances, stating, “It’s super special to be part of another Canadian sweep.”

This success follows Thompson’s fifth gold in a seven-race stretch in Veysonnaz, Switzerland, where she was accompanied by Brittany Phelan and Sherret on the podium. The 32-year-old athlete has now topped the women’s standings for a fourth season, solidifying her status as one of the all-time greats in ski cross.

In a thrilling display of talent, Thompson went on to secure six victories, culminating in a final race triumph over Berger of France in Idre Fjäll, Sweden. Her momentum continued with a season-opening win in Val Thorens, France, where she outperformed Fanny Smith of Switzerland.

Sherret, who claimed second place in Arosa, had previously triumphed in the women’s big final in Val Thorens. Meanwhile, Ottawa’s Schmidt maintained her strong form by clinching third place ahead of Berger in the small final.

The men’s competition saw Reece Howden of Cultus Lake, B.C., emerge victorious in a photo finish against reigning world champion Simone Deromedis of Italy. With two Crystal Globes to his name as overall season champion, Howden has established himself as a force to be reckoned with in ski cross.

The Canadian success story continued as teammate Jared Schmidt of Ottawa finished fourth in the men’s event, underscoring the depth of talent within the national team.
