One of the most exciting events to look forward to is the World Junior Hockey Championship. Last year, Canada’s hopes for a three-peat were dashed in Sweden, but this time around, they have a chance to reclaim the title on home ice in Ottawa. The Canadians are considered slight favorites to win over the defending champion United States. Keep an eye out for Gavin McKenna, a talented forward from the Medicine Hat Tigers who leads the WHL in scoring. Although he just turned 17, he’s already making a name for himself and could be a top pick in the NHL draft in the future.
Canada’s first game kicks off on Boxing Day against Finland, followed by matchups with Latvia and Germany before a New Year’s Eve showdown against the U.S. If you missed the previous newsletter, you can catch up on the World Juniors primer.
In football, the College Football Playoff is set to begin with a matchup between the seventh-ranked Fighting Irish and No. 10 Indiana. The Hoosiers, led by Canadian quarterback Kurtis Rourke, have been a surprise team this season. The playoff features three more games on Saturday before the top-ranked teams join in for the quarterfinals on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
The NBA will also showcase a quintuple-header on Christmas Day, featuring top teams and exciting matchups. Women’s college basketball will see a showdown between fourth-ranked UConn and No. 7 USC, highlighting top prospects for the WNBA draft.
Olympic sports enthusiasts can look forward to Lindsey Vonn’s comeback in Switzerland, where she will compete in World Cup super-G races. Canadian alpine skiers are also making their mark in competitions, with MikaĆ«l Kingsbury aiming for his 93rd career victory.
