Military conducts airstrikes against Houthis in Yemen

The U.S. military has confirmed that it carried out airstrikes in Yemen, targeting a missile storage site and a command-and-control center operated by Iran-backed Houthi rebels. The strikes were aimed at disrupting and degrading Houthi operations, particularly their attacks against U.S. Navy warships and merchant vessels in the Southern Red Sea, Bab al-Mandeb, and Gulf of Aden.

According to a release from U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), the strikes were successful and involved the use of F/A-18 aircraft, as well as assets from the Navy and the Air Force. The footage from CENTCOM showed the F/A-18s taking off, showcasing the military’s commitment to protecting U.S. and coalition personnel, regional partners, and international shipping.

Amidst the ongoing attacks against shipping by Houthi militants, there has been a growing disapproval both at home and abroad as the U.S. avoids direct action against the rebels. The Houthi militants have reportedly targeted over 100 merchant vessels since the beginning of the Israel-Hamas war in October 2023, with their attacks continuing until Israel ceases its campaign in Gaza.

The U.S. Navy ships have also had to repel attacks from the Houthi rebels in the Gulf of Aden, further escalating tensions in the region. The conflict has led to heightened concerns about the safety of international shipping lanes and the need to protect vital maritime routes.

As the situation in Yemen remains volatile, it is essential for the international community to address the root causes of the conflict and work towards a peaceful resolution. The U.S. military’s airstrikes against the Houthi rebels signify a continued effort to disrupt their operations and safeguard the interests of the United States and its allies in the region.
