Baseball Hall of Famer Rickey Henderson dead at 65: reports

Baseball legend Rickey Henderson, known for his record-breaking stolen bases and impressive career spanning 25 seasons, passed away at the age of 65 after battling pneumonia. Henderson, a 10-time All-Star, made his mark in the MLB by stealing a total of 1,406 bases, surpassing Lou Brock’s previous record.

In addition to his base-stealing prowess, Henderson also displayed power at the plate, hitting 297 home runs and driving in 1,115 RBIs. His 81 leadoff home runs remain a major league record to this day.

Hailing from Oakland, California, Henderson was drafted by the Athletics in 1976 and quickly made his mark in the league, earning his first All-Star selection in 1980. Throughout his career, he played for several teams including the New York Yankees, San Diego Padres, and Toronto Blue Jays.

Henderson’s achievements on the field were recognized with inductions into the Hall of Fame in 2009, where he was celebrated for his contributions to the game. He also won World Series titles with the A’s in 1989 and the Blue Jays in 1993, along with earning accolades such as the American League Championship Series MVP in 1989 and a Gold Glove Award in 1981.

Known for his charismatic personality and exceptional skills on the diamond, Henderson’s legacy in baseball will forever be remembered. He would have celebrated his 66th birthday on Christmas Day, leaving behind a lasting impact on the sport.
