Squamish RCMP Recover Bodies of Missing Individuals After Landslide on Sea to Sky Highway

Squamish RCMP have announced that they have successfully recovered the bodies of both individuals who went missing in the devastating landslide that occurred on Dec. 14. The landslide, which occurred near Lions Bay, approximately 40 kilometres north of Vancouver, caused the temporary closure of the Sea to Sky Highway, disrupting the road connection between Vancouver and Whistler. The landslide also impacted a nearby residence where two individuals were trapped.

While one body was recovered the day after the landslide, search and rescue teams continued their efforts throughout the week to locate the second missing individual. Finally, on Saturday evening at around 5:30 p.m. PST, searchers were able to locate and recover the second body, bringing closure to the tragic event.

The recovery of the second body has brought the total number of confirmed fatalities to three following a severe windstorm that hit B.C.’s South Coast on Dec. 14. In addition to the individuals impacted by the landslide, another person tragically lost their life in Surrey, B.C. after being struck by a falling tree branch.

Lions Bay Mayor Ken Berry expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of multiple agencies involved in the search and recovery mission. These agencies included heavy urban search and rescue teams, police, fire departments, and Metro Vancouver’s emergency management team.

At this time, the names of the two individuals involved in the landslide tragedy are being withheld from the public.
