Netanyahu goes against doctor’s orders, appears in Israeli parliament after surgery

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu made a surprise appearance in the Israeli parliament on Tuesday for a crucial budget-related vote, despite objections from doctors following his prostate surgery on Sunday night. The 75-year-old leader, who was accompanied by his personal physician Dr. Tzvi Berkowitz, appeared in good spirits as he took his seat for a brief appearance.

Netanyahu underwent surgery to have his prostate removed after suffering a urinary tract infection, which was attributed to a benign enlargement of his prostate. Despite his recent health issues, Netanyahu showed determination by attending the vote, which centered around the Trapped Profits Law. This law would allow the government to tax trapped profits, earnings that are retained by corporations and multinationals for reinvestment in business growth, infrastructure, and research.

The passing of this bill is crucial for the approval of the state budget, which must be completed by March 31 to avoid triggering national elections. However, two parties in Israel’s governing coalition, United Torah Judaism (UTJ) and Otzma Yehudit, threatened to vote against the bill if their demands were not met.

UTJ, which controls seven Knesset seats, expressed opposition to the bill due to the government’s failure to advance legislation exempting Orthodox Jewish citizens from military service. On the other hand, Otzma Yehudit, also with seven seats, demanded an increased budget for the police, prison service, and firefighting agencies.

Netanyahu’s government, comprising seven parties with a total of 68 seats out of 120, faces challenges in garnering the necessary support for the bill. The Prime Minister’s recent health concerns add another layer of complexity to the situation, as he continues to recover from surgery while fulfilling his duties.

Despite undergoing several health procedures in recent years, including hernia surgery and the implantation of a pacemaker, Netanyahu remains active in leading the IDF on multiple fronts across the Middle East. He is also involved in testifying in a corruption case against him in Israel.

In addition to domestic affairs, Netanyahu’s government has been engaged in military operations targeting Iranian terrorists and their proxies. Recently, the IDF launched strikes against Houthi rebels in Yemen, with U.S. Central Command forces also conducting precision strikes against Iran-backed Houthi targets in the region.

As Netanyahu balances his health, political responsibilities, and military operations, the future of the Trapped Profits Law and the state budget remain uncertain. Netanyahu’s determination to fulfill his duties despite health challenges underscores his resilience and commitment to leading Israel in challenging times.
