President-elect Donald Trump’s allies are expressing outrage over the initial characterization of the brutal car attack in New Orleans as not terror-related by the FBI. The attack, which occurred on Bourbon Street during New Year’s Eve celebrations, left at least 15 people dead and dozens more injured. The suspect, identified as Shamsud-Din Jabbar, was killed by police after opening fire on them.
Initially, the FBI stated that the attack was not related to terrorism, but later backtracked and launched a terrorism investigation allegedly connected to ISIS. An ISIS flag was found in the truck used in the attack, leading authorities to believe it was an act of terror.
Conservative lawmakers, including Sen. Marsha Blackburn, criticized the FBI for its handling of the attack and called for the swift confirmation of Trump’s pick to lead the FBI, Kash Patel. Blackburn slammed the FBI for reportedly failing to respond to the suspect’s home in a timely manner, suggesting that the agency had failed in its core mission.
The FBI, in response to the criticisms, reiterated that the attack was being investigated as an act of terrorism and stated that they were working with their partners to identify any possible associates of the suspect. Jabbar, a 42-year-old U.S. citizen and Army veteran, had served in Afghanistan from 2009 to 2010.
President Trump, in a statement on Truth Social, blamed President Biden’s policies for the attack, calling him the “WORST PRESIDENT IN THE HISTORY OF AMERICA.” Biden, on the other hand, mourned the attack and praised the resilience of the people of New Orleans.
As the investigation into the attack continues, the nation grapples with the aftermath of yet another act of terror on American soil. The FBI’s handling of the situation has come under scrutiny, with calls for strong leadership and swift action to prevent future tragedies. The people of New Orleans, however, remain steadfast in their resilience and determination to overcome this tragedy.
