DOJ considers charging 200 more people 4 years after Jan. 6 Capitol attack

The Justice Department is contemplating charging as many as 200 additional individuals for their alleged participation in the January 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol, according to a recent report. The new data, released on the 4-year anniversary of the event, includes 60 people suspected of assaulting or obstructing police officers, as reported by Politico.

President-elect Trump is scheduled to be inaugurated as the next president of the country in just two weeks. In a previous interview with NBC, Trump expressed his desire to pardon the Jan. 6 rioters on his first day in office and asserted that individuals on the Jan. 6 committee in Congress should be imprisoned. “I’m going to look at everything. We’ll look at individual cases,” Trump stated. “But I’m going to be acting very quickly.”

Approximately 1,600 individuals have already faced federal charges related to the breach of the U.S. Capitol, with over 600 accused of assaulting or resisting law enforcement, as per Politico. Nearly 200 defendants were charged with carrying a dangerous weapon on Capitol grounds, and 153 were accused of destruction of government property. The figures released on Monday mark the first time the Justice Department has estimated the number of cases yet to be prosecuted.

Furthermore, around 1,100 Jan. 6 defendants have been convicted and received sentencing, but 300 of the cases that have been charged have not reached the trial stage, as reported by Politico.

When President Biden was questioned by reporters on Sunday about whether he still viewed Trump as a threat to democracy, he responded by emphasizing the necessity of reestablishing fundamental democratic norms. “We’ve got to get back to establishing basic democratic norms,” Biden stated. “I think what he did was a genuine threat to democracy. I’m hopeful that we are beyond that.”

It is crucial to address the aftermath of the January 6 Capitol riot and hold those responsible accountable to uphold the rule of law and protect democracy. The ongoing legal proceedings and investigations aim to ensure justice is served and prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
