B.C. basketball team to skip games over alleged mistreatment of trans player

Collegiate Basketball Team Boycotts Games Over Treatment of Transgender Teammate

A collegiate basketball team in British Columbia has taken a stand against alleged mistreatment of their transgender teammate by refusing to play games against another team in their division this weekend. The Vancouver Island University Mariners have made it clear that they do not feel safe playing at Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford, B.C.

All 13 players on the Mariners squad have signed a letter expressing their concerns about the treatment of their teammate, Harriette Mackenzie, who is transgender. Mackenzie spoke out about verbal and physical mistreatment she faced during games against Columbia Bible College in October. The visiting team’s coach, Taylor Claggett, reportedly made derogatory comments about Mackenzie’s eligibility to play against women and even physically targeted her during a game.

Despite Mackenzie filing a complaint with the Pacific Western Athletic Association (PACWEST), the governing body has not taken any action to address the situation. This lack of response has led the Mariners to boycott the upcoming games at Columbia Bible College until Claggett is suspended, the provincial championship is moved to a different venue, and the school commits to a zero-tolerance policy for hate and discrimination.

The team, which is currently ranked first in the conference and fifth in the country, emphasized that their decision to boycott the games is not taken lightly. They are calling on PACWEST to postpone the games or register them as no wins or losses if they are not willing to support the team’s stance.

It is clear that the Mariners are standing up for their teammate and demanding a safe and inclusive environment for all athletes. Their actions highlight the importance of addressing discrimination and promoting equality in sports.

As of now, Vancouver Island University, Columbia Bible College, and PACWEST have not responded to requests for comment on the situation.
