Biden calls for immediate ceasefire in call with Israel’s Netanyahu

President Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu engaged in a crucial phone call on Sunday to discuss the ongoing ceasefire negotiations and efforts to secure the release of hostages. This discussion revolved around a release deal that was initially proposed in May of the previous year and received unanimous endorsement from the UN Security Council.

According to a statement from the White House, the conversation between the two leaders delved into the significant regional changes that have transpired following the ceasefire agreement in Lebanon, the collapse of the Assad regime in Syria, and the diminishing influence of Iran in the region.

The Biden administration, along with Egypt and Qatar, have been working tirelessly over the past year to broker a compromise that would lead to the release of the captured hostages and bring an end to the conflict between Israel and Hamas. However, negotiations have hit a roadblock as Hamas refuses to release the captives without a clear resolution to the war, while Netanyahu is adamant about achieving “total victory” over the militant group.

President Biden emphasized the urgent need for a ceasefire and the swift return of the hostages, coupled with an increase in humanitarian aid. Netanyahu, on the other hand, has committed to the first phase of the plan, which involves a partial release of hostages in exchange for a temporary cessation of hostilities. Hamas, however, is demanding a complete withdrawal and a definitive end to the fighting.

During the call, Netanyahu expressed his gratitude to President Biden for the unwavering support of Israel and America’s commitment to Israel’s security and national defense.

As the negotiations continue and the fate of the ceasefire and hostage release hangs in the balance, it is imperative for all parties involved to find common ground and work towards a peaceful resolution that ensures the safety and well-being of all individuals affected by the conflict.
