Maud Lewis artwork valued at more than $30K stolen from Halifax home

Halifax Regional Police are reaching out to the public for assistance in locating three valuable Maud Lewis artworks that went missing from a residence in Halifax. The stolen items are three Christmas cards created by the renowned Nova Scotia folk artist, depicting various winter landscapes. The theft was reported on November 25, 2024, from a home on Cambridge Street.

Each of these Christmas cards is estimated to be valued at over $10,000, according to a news release from the Halifax Regional Police. The pieces measure 7 by 5 inches and are both matted and framed, making them distinct and easily recognizable.

Maud Lewis, who passed away in 1970, initially sold her vibrant and cheerful art pieces for just a few dollars. However, as she gained recognition in her later years and eventually garnered international acclaim, the value of her work skyrocketed.

Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the theft in Halifax or possessing video footage from the vicinity to contact 902-490-5020. Alternatively, anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
