California city declares itself a ‘non-sanctuary’ city
Leaders in Huntington Beach, a city in Southern California, have taken a bold stance against the state’s immigration policies by voting to become a “non-sanctuary” city and ignore the state’s sanctuary laws. The resolution, titled “Non-Sanctuary City for Illegal Immigration for the Prevention of Crime,” was unanimously approved by the Huntington Beach City Council with a 7-0 vote. Mayor Pat Burns, a former law enforcement officer, spearheaded the legislation, citing public safety as the primary motivation.
During the council meeting, Mayor Burns emphasized the importance of utilizing all available resources to ensure the safety and well-being of the community. The resolution directs the city’s police officers to collaborate with federal immigration authorities and notify them when releasing an illegal immigrant from jail. This move is a direct challenge to California’s sanctuary city policies, which prohibit local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration authorities.
In addition to passing the resolution, Huntington Beach has also filed a lawsuit against the state, claiming that the sanctuary state laws are unconstitutional. Councilman Chad Williams criticized state lawmakers for prioritizing the protection of illegal immigrants, including those convicted of violent crimes, over the safety of law-abiding citizens. He emphasized the importance of using every available tool to keep the community safe.
The resolution highlights the crimes committed by illegal immigrants, particularly those associated with criminal gangs like MS-13 and Tren de Aragua. This issue gained national attention after members of Tren de Aragua allegedly terrorized residents at a Colorado apartment complex. The city’s decision to become a non-sanctuary city comes at a time when California Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed a legal defense fund to protect illegal immigrants from deportation.
Huntington Beach City Attorney Michael Gates expressed frustration with California’s approach to law enforcement, calling for the state to support local police officers in their efforts to combat crime. He emphasized the importance of upholding federal immigration laws and criticized the state for hindering law enforcement efforts.
The city’s bold stance against sanctuary policies reflects a commitment to prioritizing public safety and upholding the rule of law. By cooperating with federal immigration authorities and challenging the state’s sanctuary laws, Huntington Beach is taking a proactive approach to addressing the complex issue of illegal immigration.
