Dalhousie and King’s to lower flags in honour of student killed in Halifax collision

A tragic incident occurred in Halifax on Monday, as a young woman named Alexandria Wortman lost her life after being struck by a vehicle. Wortman, who was only 21 years old, is being fondly remembered for her compassion, fierce advocacy for social justice, and dedication to helping others.

Originally from Moncton, N.B., Wortman had been studying at the University of King’s College in Halifax from 2021 to 2022 before transferring to Dalhousie University’s faculty of arts and social sciences. According to her obituary, Wortman had a strong aversion to social injustice and inequality, always standing up for marginalized, underprivileged, or at-risk individuals or groups. She was a passionate advocate for human rights, diversity, and inclusion, always ready to speak out against any form of discrimination.

A 2021 graduate of Riverview High School, Wortman had a deep love for working with children and had aspirations of becoming a teacher. Her kind and caring nature made her a beloved member of both the King’s and Dalhousie communities. In a joint statement, the universities announced that they would be lowering their campus flags to half-mast on February 12, which would have been Wortman’s 22nd birthday, to honor her memory.

The tragic incident that claimed Wortman’s life occurred on January 27 when she was struck by a vehicle while crossing an intersection in central Halifax. The driver, a 32-year-old man, has since been charged with multiple offenses, including operating a conveyance causing death, impaired driving causing death, and leaving the scene of an accident.

The loss of Alexandria Wortman has left a deep void in the hearts of those who knew her. Her commitment to social justice, advocacy for the marginalized, and passion for helping others will forever be remembered. May she rest in peace.
