Guatemala agrees to accept deportees from other countries, in deal with Rubio

Guatemalan President Bernardo Arevalo has officially confirmed that his country is open to accepting migrants from other nationalities who are being deported from the United States under the administration of President Donald Trump. This announcement came during a visit from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, where a new agreement was made designating Guatemala as a “safe third country” for deportation. As part of this agreement, the U.S. will cover the costs of returning migrants to their home countries.

During a press conference with Rubio, Arevalo stated, “We have agreed to increase by 40% the number of flights carrying deportees, both Guatemalan nationals and deportees from other countries.” This agreement mirrors a similar deal made by Rubio with El Salvador’s President Nayib Bukele the day prior. Bukele’s agreement goes even further, as El Salvador agreed to accept U.S. deportees of any nationality, including American citizens and legal residents who have committed violent crimes.

Rubio, who is currently traveling to Panama and other Latin American countries to advance President Trump’s “Golden Age” agenda, praised Bukele’s agreement with El Salvador as unprecedented. This agreement with El Salvador, known as a “safe third country” deal, could potentially serve as an option for Venezuelan gang members convicted in the U.S. if Venezuela refuses to take them back. Bukele has also offered to accept detainees of any nationality, including those affiliated with Venezuela’s Tren de Aragua gang.

While the offer to take in violent American criminals is unlikely to be executed due to legal restrictions on deporting U.S. citizens, the significance of Bukele’s offer was noted by a U.S. official. The Trump administration has clarified that they have no plans to deport American citizens. Nevertheless, Bukele’s willingness to cooperate on this issue is seen as a positive step in addressing the challenges posed by illegal immigration and criminal activities.

In conclusion, the agreements between the U.S., Guatemala, and El Salvador mark a significant development in the efforts to address the issue of illegal immigration and cross-border criminal activities. These partnerships demonstrate a commitment to cooperation and finding practical solutions to complex challenges. As Secretary of State Rubio continues his diplomatic efforts in the region, the hope is that these agreements will contribute to greater security and stability for all countries involved.
