Canadian Racewalker Evan Dunfee Sets North American Record at Australian 20km Race Walking Championships

Canadian racewalker Evan Dunfee made history on Sunday, setting a new North American record in the 20-kilometre race at the Australian 20km Race Walking Championships. Dunfee crossed the finish line in an impressive time of one hour, 17 minutes, and 39 seconds, outpacing Australia’s Rhydian Cowley who finished in 1:18:35.

In a post on social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter), Dunfee expressed his excitement about his achievement, calling it a “dream day.” He revealed that he had been aiming to break Julio Martinez’s North American record of 1:17:46 for nearly two decades, and finally achieved his goal on the perfect course with ideal weather conditions and the right mindset. Dunfee thanked Australia for providing the setting for his record-breaking performance.

Dunfee, a three-time Olympian, has made significant strides in his racewalking career. He secured a bronze medal in the 50km race walk at the Tokyo Games in 2021, marking Canada’s first-ever medal in the event. Additionally, he finished fourth in the same event at the Rio 2016 Olympics.

At 34 years old, Dunfee continues to push the boundaries of his sport and showcase his talent on the international stage. His latest accomplishment at the Australian 20km Race Walking Championships solidifies his status as one of the top racewalkers in North America.
