New Mexico reports Texas measles outbreak has now crossed its border

The Texas Department of State Health and Services (DSHS) has been closely monitoring a rapidly spreading measles outbreak that has seen a significant increase in cases over the past two weeks. Initially reported on Feb. 5 in Gaines County, officials had warned that more cases were likely to surface due to the highly contagious nature of the disease.

The outbreak, which is considered the worst in decades, has now extended into New Mexico. The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) has confirmed three new cases just last week, bringing the total number of cases in the state to eight. The cases meet the criteria for an outbreak as outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, with three unrelated cases reported in Lea County, which borders Gaines County. Despite the proximity of the outbreak, a definitive connection between the cases has yet to be established.

Dr. Chad Smelser, NMDOH Deputy State Epidemiologist, emphasized the importance of investigating every suspected case and urged individuals exhibiting symptoms consistent with measles to seek medical attention promptly.

Out of the eight individuals infected in New Mexico, six were not vaccinated against measles. Among the cases are four adults and four minors, with two of the adults believing they had received the vaccination during childhood.

NMDOH has taken proactive measures to notify individuals who may have been exposed to the virus and has provided guidance on prevention. The department has also released a statement listing specific locations where exposure may have occurred during certain times.

In response to the outbreak, Lea County is offering free vaccinations without the need for an appointment at five public health vaccination clinics scheduled over the next two weeks.

The situation remains a cause for concern as health officials work diligently to contain the spread of the measles outbreak in Texas and New Mexico. It is imperative for individuals to stay informed, follow recommended vaccination guidelines, and seek medical attention if they suspect they may have been exposed to the virus.
