Pope Francis resting on day 10 in hospital for lung infection that led to early stages of kidney insufficiency

Pope Francis, 88, has been spending his 10th day at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital, where he is being treated for a complex lung infection that has led to the early stages of kidney insufficiency, as confirmed by the Vatican. The Pope was reported to be resting on Monday morning after a good night’s sleep, according to a statement released by the Vatican.

It remains unclear whether Pope Francis was awake and having breakfast at the time. He was admitted to the hospital on February 14 after his bronchitis worsened, leading to a diagnosis of a complex viral, bacterial, and fungal respiratory tract infection, followed by pneumonia in both lungs.

Late Sunday, doctors discovered early signs of kidney insufficiency in the blood tests, which they stated was under control. While the Pope’s condition remains critical, there have been no further respiratory crises since Saturday evening. Pope Francis, who had part of one lung removed in the past, is currently receiving high flows of supplemental oxygen and received two blood transfusions on Sunday to increase his hemoglobin levels. Doctors have described his prognosis as guarded.

Despite his health challenges, Pope Francis was alert and responsive on Sunday and even attended Mass. Doctors have highlighted that the main concern for the Pope is the risk of sepsis, a severe blood infection that can arise as a complication of pneumonia. As of Monday morning, there have been no signs of sepsis in his condition.

This marks the 10th day of Pope Francis’ hospitalization, which matches the longest hospital stay of his papacy. In 2021, he spent 10 days at Gemelli Hospital after undergoing surgery to remove part of his colon. Cardinal Timothy Dolan of New York acknowledged on Sunday that the Catholic faithful were united in prayer at the bedside of a “dying father,” hinting at the seriousness of Pope Francis’ condition.

Dolan expressed hope that the Pope would recover, despite his fragile health. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
